Hiking With Kids: The Only Packing List You Need (By Season)

Exactly what to bring (and what to stop overpacking). Includes comfort + safety essentials and my favorite budget swaps.

If packing for a hike with kids makes you feel like you’re prepping for an expedition… you’re not alone.

The good news: you don’t need “everything.” You need the right things, packed in a way that keeps kids comfortable, safe, and happy—without turning you into the family pack mule.

This is the packing list I use for real-life hikes with kids (day hikes, parks, easy-to-moderate trails), plus seasonal add-ons so you’re not guessing based on the forecast.

The simple rule: Pack for comfort + safety, not “just in case”

When kids melt down on a trail, it’s usually because of one of these:

  • They’re hungry or thirsty
  • They’re cold, hot, wet, or itchy
  • They’re tired, blistered, or scraped
  • They’re bored
  • You didn’t bring the one small thing that would’ve fixed it (band-aid, extra layer, bug spray)

So we’re packing to solve those problems—without overpacking.

Start here: The “Every Hike” Core List (all seasons)

This is the base list I bring no matter what time of year it is.

1) Water (and a simple backup)

  • Water bottles for each kid (filled)
  • Extra water for you (because you’ll be the backup)
  • Optional: electrolyte packets for hot days or big efforts

Tip: Kids drink more when the bottle is easy to use. Leak-proof + one-handed matters.

2) Snacks (more than you think)

Bring 2 snack “rounds” per hour you plan to be out. Seriously.

  • Easy fuel: granola bars, pretzels, fruit snacks, crackers
  • “Real” snack: peanut butter sandwich, cheese sticks, beef jerky, trail mix
  • Emergency treat: one fun thing you only bring hiking (works like magic)

Mom math: If it’s a 2-hour hike, pack like it’s 3.

3) Layers (even in summer)

  • One lightweight warm layer per kid (hoodie/fleece)
  • One extra pair of socks per kid (the most underrated item on this list)

Why socks? Wet feet and blisters end hikes faster than almost anything.

4) Sun + bug basics

  • Sunscreen (travel size)
  • Bug spray or wipes
  • Hat(s) for kids
  • Sunglasses if your kids will actually keep them on

5) “Small safety kit” (you don’t need a whole pharmacy)

  • Band-aids (a few sizes)
  • 2–3 alcohol wipes
  • Small tube of antibiotic ointment
  • 2 blister pads or moleskin strips
  • Tweezers (splinters + ticks)
  • Kids’ meds only if you personally use them on outings (no need to overdo it)

6) Emergency essentials (lightweight, high value)

  • Whistle for each kid (clip-on; teach them: 3 blasts = help)
  • Tiny flashlight or headlamp (one is enough for the family)
  • Emergency blanket (the flat silver kind)
  • Phone + portable charger (or fully charged phone minimum)

7) A “kid comfort” item

This is the secret to smoother hikes.
Choose one:

  • Lightweight sit pad / small blanket
  • Tiny “trail toy” (more ideas below)
  • Comfort item for younger kids (small lovey, etc.)

8) Clothes protection (depending on conditions)

  • Lightweight rain jacket OR packable poncho
  • Optional: simple gloves in shoulder seasons

9) Navigation (even on easy trails)

You don’t need to be a wilderness expert, but you do need a plan:

  • Screenshot the trail map (or park map) before you lose service
  • Know your turnaround time

10) Trash bag (for trash + wet stuff)

One grocery bag solves a lot:

  • Wet socks
  • Muddy clothes
  • Snack wrappers
  • Surprise “nature treasures”

What to stop overpacking (and bring instead)

Here are the most common “pack guilt” items that weigh you down and rarely help.

Stop overpacking: Extra outfits

Instead bring:

  • 1 warm layer + 1 extra sock pair
    That combo fixes most comfort issues.

Stop overpacking: Giant snack variety

Instead bring:

  • 3–4 reliable favorites + 1 treat
    Kids don’t need options—they need fuel.

Stop overpacking: Full-size everything

Instead bring:

  • Travel-size sunscreen + bug spray
  • Mini first aid kit
  • 1 multitask item (trash bag, bandana, wipes)

Stop overpacking: Big toys

Instead bring: tiny trail fun

  • Magnifying glass
  • Nature scavenger hunt card
  • “Find 5 colors” challenge
  • A tiny notebook + pencil for “trail notes”
  • Clip-on bug viewer (optional)

Packing list by season

Use the core list above year-round. Then add these seasonal upgrades.


Spring packing list (mud, chilly starts, surprise rain)

Spring hikes can feel like four seasons in one afternoon.

Add:

  • Waterproof layer (rain jacket or poncho)
  • Extra socks (yes, again)
  • Light gloves for kids (especially early spring)
  • A warmer midlayer (fleece beats cotton)
  • Tick checks supplies: tweezers + a system (more below)

Spring tip: Do a quick tick check at the car and again at home. Put a lint roller in the car if you want a fast clothing sweep.


Summer packing list (heat, sun, bugs, water play)

Add:

  • Extra water (more than you think)
  • Electrolytes (optional but helpful)
  • Cooling items: small spray bottle, cooling towel, or just extra water for heads/neck
  • Bug protection (spray or wipes)
  • Lightweight long sleeves if bugs are intense
  • Water shoes if you’ll be creek-walking

Summer tip: Plan a “shade snack break” halfway. Kids rally hard after 5 minutes in the shade with food.


Fall packing list (layers, wind, early sunsets)

Fall is the best hiking season… until it isn’t.

Add:

  • Extra warm layer (puffy or thicker fleece)
  • Light beanie for kids
  • Headlamp (days get shorter)
  • Hand warmers (cheap + lightweight)
  • A warm drink in a small thermos for longer hikes

Fall tip: Start earlier than you think. The earlier sunset sneaks up fast with kids.


Winter packing list (cold + wet = the real enemy)

Winter hiking with kids can be amazing—if you protect hands, feet, and morale.

Add:

  • Waterproof gloves/mittens (bring a spare pair for smaller kids)
  • Warm hat + neck gaiter
  • Insulated layer (puffy jacket)
  • Waterproof boots (or water-resistant with warm socks)
  • Hand warmers
  • More snacks (your body burns more in the cold)
  • Emergency blanket (already in core list, but extra important in winter)

Winter tip: If someone’s hands are cold, the hike is over soon. Warm hands = happy kids.

My favorite budget swaps (still safe, still comfy)

You do not need expensive gear to hike with kids. Here are my favorite “budget but smart” swaps:

  • Packable poncho instead of expensive rain shell (great for backup)
  • Thrift-store fleece (seriously—kids outgrow it so fast)
  • Dollar-store garden gloves for messy/muddy exploring (spring bonus)
  • DIY snack packs (zip bags of pretzels, cereal, trail mix) instead of pricey single packs
  • Refill travel bottles for sunscreen/bug spray instead of buying travel sizes every time
  • Foam seat pad cut from an old camping mat (trail breaks without the bulk)

A quick “kid safety” add-on most parents skip (but shouldn’t)

Make it easy to identify your child if you get separated:

  • Write your phone number on a small card and tuck it in their pocket
  • Or write your number on the inside of their shoe tag with a marker

And teach this simple rule:
If you can’t see me, you STOP and you BLOW your whistle (3 times).

Packing based on hike length (so you don’t carry too much)

For a short hike (under 90 minutes):

  • Water, snacks, layers, mini first aid, sun/bug, trash bag

For a half-day adventure:

  • Everything in the core list + season add-ons + charger + more snacks

For a full-day hike:

  • Core list + season add-ons + more food (simple sandwiches) + extra socks + bigger water plan
